Sylt is as varied as no other island. It is the largest of the Northfrisian islands and stretches over more than 38.5 km from North to South and up to 12.5 km from West to East. In some places, the island only measures 350 m in width.
Sylt boasts fine, long sandy beaches, rough surf, quiet Wadden Sea, dunes and dykes, lush green meadows, blooming heathland and imposing cliffs. Sylt also offers the ideal habitat for numerous animal and plant species: Already early on, the Sylt have recognized that the balance of nature is very sensitive and have identified large parts of the island as protected areas.
The almost 40 km-long west coast of Sylt with fine sandy beach attracts many visitors - it is rough and beautiful! Here you can also find many of the trendy villages with chic restaurants and bars. A mudflat walk on the east side of the island is an absolute must! The hike through mud is always an experience!

On the 21st of February, for example, the traditional Biikebrennen is celebrated. Originally, the fire should exorcize evil spirits and protect the seed. In the Middle Ages, the bonfires were lit to approve the whalers. Nowadays, the fires are supposed do adopt the cold winter.
From the mainland, Sylt can be reached either by car carrying shuttle train from Niebüll to Westerland via the Hindenburgdamm or by the Romo-Sylt ferry. Sylt also has its own airport, which is operated by Lufthansa from many major German cities.
