DESCRIPTION
Leuchie Walled Garden is an exclusive holiday residence near North Berwick on the east coast of Scotland. The building forms part of a walled garden that is around 200 years old and covers approximately five hectares. The gardens were laid out in the early 19th century and still offer a sheltered, peaceful setting with mature trees, espalier fruit trees, flower beds and well-tended lawns. The house itself was designed in 1960 by the Scottish architect James Dunbar-Nasmith for the Hamilton-Dalrymple family. Noteworthy is the successful blend of modern architecture with historical elements. Whilst many houses of this era have been completely modernised, Leuchie Walled Garden is the result of a collection of antiques, furniture and family portraits of the Dalrymple family that has grown over generations. This creates a fascinating contrast between tradition and modernity. Architecturally, the building captivates with its clean lines, large glass surfaces and open-plan layout. The generous window fronts allow for optimal lighting of the interior and foster a close connection between the living area and the garden. You experience a surprising transition: the historic gardener’s bungalow makes a rather traditional impression, yet inside, a light-filled, modern home opens up, offering generous views of the surrounding garden landscape. In 2020, the property underwent extensive renovation and was adapted to modern living standards. As part of the project, contemporary sustainability technologies such as geothermal heating, improved insulation and energy-efficient construction measures were integrated. At the same time, the architects took care to preserve the original character of the house. The creation of new living and kitchen areas, as well as several bathrooms, enhances comfort without altering the building’s architectural identity. The combination of historic gardens, modern architecture, family history and scenic beauty makes Leuchie Walled Garden a unique example of Scottish domestic culture and a special retreat.
